THE HISTORY OF MVE
Mt. Vernon School District and Enola School District consolidated in 1991 to form Mt. Vernon-Enola School District. The merging of the two districts has had positive effects on the school itself as well as on the surrounding communities.
Each of these two districts has had a history of consolidations with other area schools. Between 1931 and 1949, Mount Nebo, Bristol, Garland Springs, Naylor, and Red Hill Schools consolidated with Mt. Vernon. Between 1930 and 1940, Cross Roads, Barney, Cedar Hill, and Happy Hollow Schools consolidated with Enola.
The communities of Mt. Vernon, Enola, and Naylor and their more rural surrounding areas compose the Mt. Vernon-Enola School District, which presently covers 106 square miles. Each of these three communities has several businesses as well as several churches of different denominations.
Livestock farming is a major economic activity in the area. Some district residents are full-time farmers, but more are part-time farmers who have full-time jobs in Conway, Searcy, Heber Springs, or Little Rock, cities that are in commuting distance.
In addition to being the district's largest employer, the school is also the center of community activities. Community support for the school is largely effected through an active Parent-Teacher Organization. District patrons are highly supportive of the school's basketball, baseball, softball, and music programs, and also of other activities and events sponsored by the school and its various clubs and organizations.
The consolidation of Mt. Vernon and Enola Schools has been a positive step forward. Each year students in the district are offered a broader curriculum and more academic opportunities. Students have a wider range of extracurricular activities. Just as the community is more involved with the school, students are also more involved in community activities than they were in the past. The improvement in the inter-community relations since the formation of the consolidated district has been one of the major factors in the success of the school and its students. Each year continues to bring changes that serve to enhance the quality of the community and the school and the education provided by both.
Mt. Vernon-Enola High School is located in Mt. Vernon on the former Mt. Vernon School campus. The high school facilities include three classroom buildings, an agriculture building, a family and consumer science building, a cafetorium, a gymnasium, and administrative offices. The business department consists of two fully equipped computer labs. One for the advanced level classes and one for intermediate level classes.
The library is in the main classroom building. The newly remodeled library has a fully equipped computer lab for student use. Students and adults have access to library services throughout the year and a number of computer classes are offered to students and adults.
The elementary school, which is located in Enola on the former Enola School campus, has three classroom buildings, a library, a cafetorium, and a gymnasium. It, too, has a fully equipped computer lab. A pre-school, which is part of the ABC program, is housed on the elementary campus.
The district enrollment has risen over the past five years. Many parents have made decisions to move from the urban areas and large school districts to rural areas with their smaller school districts. Housing in the Mt. Vernon-Enola District has become more available as some large tracts of farm land are being subdivided for housing.
The Mt. Vernon-Enola School District is a great place for parents and students alike. The "down-home" atmosphere is appealing to almost every age group. This can be seen in the nostalgic building and facilities in which the school and community take pride. The relaxed and family atmosphere belies the serious emphasis placed on student achievement and availability of resources. Our students are exposed to the world of information and advanced technology within the classroom setting. Internet capabilities are afforded in virtually every classroom, where communication with state, local, and national information systems is at the fingertips of students. Students are exposed to a wide variety of curriculum choices, ranging from horticulture to physics. Serious emphasis is placed in the area of student achievement and students' abilities to academically succeed in society. The Mt. Vernon-Enola School District also places emphasis on the attitudes and personal qualities of our students. A comprehensive K-12 character education program models and teaches social skills to helping the development of a well-rounded individual. Our State Report Card shows our school has excellent rating on Stanford 9 test scores and in other areas of school performance. Patrons are invited to become acquainted with staff members. The employees are one of the greatest assets of the Mt. Vernon-Enola School District. The cooperation of parents, students, and school personnel is a combination, which spell success for our students.
